Indexing training

I am the Training Director for the Society of Indexers. I have taught indexing for many years, through workshops, 'live' and more recently online, and tutorials. I chair the Training Course Committee of the Society of Indexers and was previously the Training Course Co-ordinator. I have given workshops on indexing for copy-editors and proofreaders, and I regularly run in-house courses on indexing for editors at publishers such as DK and Sage. I have also run workshops for indexers working in-house at the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Law Society.

I have always enjoyed teaching, hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and worked for some years as a primary school teacher and then as an adult education lecturer in art and architectural history. I have found that many of the the skills I learned when teaching young children can also be applied to adult teaching! I have also enjoyed using electronic media to develop new forms of indexing training.

In 2009 I was presented by the Society of Indexers with the Carey Award for outstanding services to indexing, in recognition of my work as a teacher and trainer.
